Released in 2013, Grand Theft Auto V is perhaps one of the most popular games today that was released almost a decade ago. This is in part due to its online multiplayer mode that lets up to 30 players engage in a ton of different co-op and competitive game modes. Grand Theft Auto V also has a killer campaign. The campaign uses multiple protagonists, a huge open-world, amazing graphics that still hold up today, and addicting gameplay. With amazing online capabilities and a great story, it’s no wonder Grand Theft Auto V is one of the most successful releases of the decade. However, the online co-op and competitive modes lead some players to ask the question, “does Grand Theft Auto 5 support cross-platform play?”.

With 5 platforms to choose from, many players are worried or wondering if they will be able to play with their friends on another platform. The short answer, unfortunately, is no. At the time of writing this, there are currently no cross-platform capabilities between any of the platforms – except for the Xbox, but that will be explained more in-depth below as it gets a little confusing.

That’s right sadly, if you’re on PC and want to play with your friend on the PS4 or Xbox One, you are out of luck. Grand Theft Auto 5 does not support cross-platform play between any platforms (except the Xbox kinda, if you’re wondering about the Xbox 360 and Xbox One read the section below).

Cross-platform Between the Xbox 360 and Xbox One

The small caveat to Grand Theft Auto V not supporting cross-platform is the Xbox 360 version of the game. Since the Xbox One can play Xbox 360 games, if you own a copy of Grand Theft Auto V for the Xbox 360, you can play with your friends on the Xbox One so long as they are also using the Xbox 360 version of the game! That is very important to remember, they have to be using the Xbox 360 GTAV disc on their Xbox One console. This works the other way too of course (if you had an Xbox One and your friend had an Xbox 360).

So that is the only way that Grand Theft Auto V is “cross-platform”. The Xbox 360 version can be played across both Xbox consoles. Other than that, Grand Theft Auto V does not support cross-platform and as of writing this will not for the foreseeable future. If you plan on buying Grand Theft Auto V, make sure you check what consoles your friends are on if you plan on playing with them!
