Far Cry 6 is the next instalment in the critically-acclaimed Far Cry series. It was announced a couple of years ago, and then during the pandemic in 2020, it was delayed with no release date. The release date for Far Cry 6 is October 7, 2021. The game will launch before the holiday period for either Christmas or Thanksgiving. This is a new trend for Ubisoft, but it’s happening for a very deliberate reason. The company wants to avoid these busy periods when other big name games are likely also releasing to compete with it. By releasing in a relatively quiet month, the game will have the attention of everyone even vaguely interested in Far Cry and gaming as a whole. Ubisoft will probably also discount the game for both Thanksgiving’s Black Friday and Christmas. This will push sales up, something that the company needs to do to compete with the insane sales figures of 2020.
Story
Far Cry 6 tells the tale of Dani Rojas, a former soldier for Yara, the game’s setting. Players can choose to be male or female, but the character remains the same. You’ll turn from being part of the armed forces enforcing unfair laws on the locals to a guerrilla fighter. After that, your task is to disrupt the dictatorship in Yara, working against the corrupt president there who has been holding his people with an iron grip for years.
The president is called Anton Callisto. He’s a fascist dictator who has no intention of letting go of his power. He also wants his son, Diego, to follow in his footsteps. However, Diego isn’t sure that he wants to do such a thing. Both players and Diego see the struggles that Anton is causing, but he’s too deep now to turn back. In the midst of a revolution, the guerrilla fighters are working against the odds, with thousands of armed soldiers ready to gun them down.
Players will need to find and recruit important characters from around Yara who can help the guerrilla forces get a better foot on the ladder to victory. Over the course of the game, players will explore every inch of the continent in search of help, coming out on top with a crew who can help equip them and other guerrilla fighters to really fight back against the armed forces.
Gameplay
The core gameplay loop of Far Cry 6 looks set to be very similar to past games. Players will start out as a revolutionary with nothing on their side. They have a single goal and must do everything they can to accomplish it. Recruiting companions is one type of side mission to complete, but there will likely be more by the time the game is done. There should also be a specific type of side activity that is related to guerrilla fighters, such as gambling, drinking, or fighting practise.
All past Far Cry games have had outposts, so Far Cry 6 will probably have them too. They work in a contextual sense since the Yaran armed forces will have stockpiles of weapons. By taking outposts, players will free up materials and resources for the guerrilla army, possibly even recruiting new fighters in the process.
Once again, there will be animal companions in this game. These seem to vary much more than Far Cry 5, and include more unexpected twists. Another new feature to look forward to on the Far Cry 6 release date is a third-person camera. For the first time ever it will be possible to play the entire game in either first or third person. This game will be the first to use the same system as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Players can choose which gender they want their character to be, male or female. It has no impact on the story. This is a refreshing change that Ubisoft is making in the games industry. It allows the narrative developers to work on a story about a character, not necessarily an individual person with a defined gender. It will make the game far more accessible to all fans.
Finally, the last big new addition we know of is the backpack. This is an in-game feature that seems to be something players can customize throughout their time in the game. They can attach a fuel canister for a flamethrower for example, or even a rocket launcher that fires a barrage of rockets. This tool will be a key part of your guerrilla fighter persona, and is going to be a big part of your playthrough. Players will be able to shape their version of this character by customizing it, making for a much more personal experience that everyone can identify with.
